CATS the musical, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. Published in 1939, the book is a collection of amusing poems about feline psychology and sociology.  As well as the poems in the book, CATS introduces additional characters from Eliot’s unpublished drafts, most notably Grizabella.

Other notable adaptations of the work include the 1954 work entitled “Practical Cats” for speaker and orchestra by Alan Rawsthorne, and English composer, Humphrey Searle, composed another narrator piece called “Two Practical Cats” using the flute, piccolo, cello and guitar.
