The word Gump meaning a fool, a stupid person was recorded in poet, critic, and editor James Russell Lowell’s “The Biglow Papers” (1866), and accounts for the last name of the early comic strip character Andy Gump. The Gumps, a popular comic strip about a middle-class family, was created by Sidney Smith in 1917“Gump” was a term he used for a member of the Uneducated Masses.

The unflattering name was re-introduced in the story of a simple Alabama man, played by Tom Hanks in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump”.
