Geek Pride Day is an initiative which claims the right of every person to be a nerd or a geek. Tim McEachern organized a Geek Pride Festival and/or Geek Pride Day from 1998 to 2000 at a bar in Albany, New York. The “official” annual observance however, began on May 25, 2006 (primarily in Spain),  celebrating the premiere of the first Star Wars film in 1977. In 2008, the “holiday” came to the United States, and in 2009-2010 to Canada, Israel, and parts of Europe.

It shares the same day as three other science-fiction fan ‘holidays’ – Towel Day, for fans of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy by Douglas Adams, Star Wars Day, and the Glorious 25 May, for fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
