Festivus is a secular holiday observed on December 23rd as a way to celebrate the holiday season without participating in its stress, religious aspects, or commercialism. Created by writer Dan O’Keefe, Festivus was introduced to the public by his son Daniel, a screenwriter for the TV show Seinfeld.

Referred to as “a Festivus for the Rest of Us”, the holiday, as depicted in the Seinfeld episode, includes an un-decorated aluminum Festivus Pole and activities such as the “Airing of Grievances – a dinner time tradition in which each person expresses all the ways they have disappointed him or her over the past year. After the meal the “Feats of Strength” are held which involves wrestling the head of the household to the floor. The holiday ends only if the head of the household is actually pinned.
